Come September, WGAW members will be treated to screenings, curated film events and the pleasure of the company of other writers (read: a place to hang out) in our comfy renovated Writers Guild Theater. No, you can’t come in your pajamas!
(August 5, 2013)
Here’s one perk that Writers Guild West members should be over the moon about. Starting in September, all members in good standing (Current, Post-Current, Associate, Associate Caucus) will be able to attend free screenings at the newly-renovated Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. They can even bring a guest.
This new initiative, called “The Guild Screenings,” replaces the WGAW’s Film Society, which has now officially been disbanded. There will be weekend screenings of new films at no charge to our members plus special curated film events, such as a showing of current low-budget indies, a selection of films by one of the Guild’s venerable screenwriters, or even an evening of films by a member whose work may deserve showcasing. Occasionally, the writers will be on hand for question-and-answer sessions following the screening of their films.
The idea behind The Guild Screenings and theater renovation is to provide members with a more enjoyable viewing experience, complete with comfortable upholstered chairs, state-of-the art digital projection, even a sleek new lobby with cocktail seating. Popcorn and drinks will be served (there may even be food trucks, but don’t hold us to it). But it is also meant to bring our community of writers together.
“Our goal is two-fold -- to bring a mix of new films and smaller art films to our members... and to make the theater more of a fun clubhouse,” says Board Member Scott Alexander, who was a driving force behind the project. “The theater is a delightful perk of being in the Guild, and we should all get to enjoy it.
“These days, our membership encompasses so many kinds of writers working in so many fields, and we rarely get the opportunity to hang out together,” continues Alexander. “That’s the best part of the new program.”
In the next few weeks, start checking the calendar regularly so you’re up to date on what’s playing at The Guild Screenings, and keep an eye out for announcements down the road.
