Bill Balas was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis after incurring a pneumothorax as an infant. The advancing symptoms of the illness forced him to leave high school at age 17. After receiving a successful double-lung transplant he moved to Los Angeles and was accepted into the American Film Institute Conservatory, where he earned an MFA in Screenwriting.
His post-graduate accolades include an Alfred P. Sloan Award, Grand Prize in The American Screenwriting Competition, and a First Place win at the Slamdance Film Festival?s Television Writing Competition.
Most recently Bill has written for the A&E drama series Bates Motel, where he?s scripted episodes for Season One and the upcoming Season Three.
