LOS ANGELES -- The Writers Guild of America, west (WGAw) and the Writers Guild of America, East (WGAE) have announced the 101 Greatest Screenplays of all time - as voted on by members of the Writers Guilds, west and East.

“This list and the films on it are meant to be scrutinized and criticized, dissected and collected, viewed and reviewed,” said WGAw President Patric M. Verrone. “They are the literature of our industry and the legacy of our union.”

“It's difficult to think of American life without the films on this list. Just reading the titles reminds us of the fantastic journeys they have provided. Thanks to all of the writers involved for a wonderful ride,” said WGAE President Chris Albers.

The 101 finalists were compiled from over 1,400 screenplays selected by members of the Writers Guild of America, west and the Writers Guild of America, East as their favorite works; the joint-guild balloting process took place during 2005.

Celebrating the craft of screenwriting, the WGAw and Premiere Magazine co-hosted a gala tribute honoring these classic and contemporary works and the writers who created them on Thursday night, April 6, at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills.

At Thursday's event, writer-director-actor-radio host Harry Shearer delighted the capacity audience with quips and musings about the business of screenwriting.

In attendance at L.A. reception was a virtual who's who of screenwriting legends, including Robert Towne, George Lucas, Nora Ephron, Callie Khouri, Lawrence Kasdan, Frank Pierson, Eric Roth, Curtis Hanson,    Buck Henry, Alvin Sargent, Brian Helgeland, Christopher McQuarrie, Nicholas Pileggi, Phil Alden Robinson, Joseph Stefano, Marc Norman, David S. Ward, Carl Gottlieb, Walon Green, Danny Rubin, Earl Wallace, Mardik Martin, and Bob Gale, among other distinguished writers who created these acclaimed films.

The guilds' historic 101 Greatest Screenplays list, spotlighting those enduring films that have captured the imagination of generations of moviegoers, will be featured in Premiere's upcoming May special issue, hitting newsstands April 18, and slated to appear on www.premiere.com later this month.
