|Update, March 28, 2003: City of Los Angeles Business Tax
LOS ANGELES -- WGA members, beneficiaries of deceased writers and their tax advisors have received various letters from the City's Office of Finance, or the City's outside contractor ("Care Unit" or "TMA"), seeking immediate payment of City business taxes. The letters have various deadlines. Many members have received letters extending the deadline several times and currently have a deadline of March 31, 2003.
Guild representatives have been meeting with City representatives for months to develop specific guidelines for writers to use to determine if the City's Business License Tax ordinance applies to them as taxpayers. As of Friday, March 28, 2003, the Guild has exchanged drafts with City representatives and anticipates final guidelines in the near future. The Guild has not been formally advised that the deadline will be extended beyond March 31, 2003. A request for extension has been made in accordance with a recent City Council ruling that extended the deadline for 150,000 taxpayers to June 30, 2003 waiving all penalties and interest if the tax owed is under $500. This website will be updated if the City's Dept. of Finance and Office of Tax and Permit grants the same extension to allow other writers sufficient time to comply with the guidelines.
Members should consult with their personal tax advisors concerning whether the business tax applies to them and, if so, to what extent or whether a formal request for extension should be filed. The WGAw is unable to provide tax advice to individual taxpayers.
