In honor of Women’s History Month, Connect arranged a virtual meet-up between two female TV writers: Kelechi Urama (Run the World) and Charmaine DeGraté (House of the Dragon, Daisy Jones & the Six), a newer TV writer and a more seasoned TV writer, respectively. Though Urama and DeGraté had never met before, the conversation began with introductions and by the end of the hour, the women had spoken about the importance of strong female showrunners, the power of saying no, and what changes they hope to see in the industry for female writers in leadership. Three years ago, I’m sitting in a darkened movie theater, sobbing, heartbroken, tears streaming down my face. I furiously dig in my pockets, reaching for napkins to wipe my wet eyes. No, I’m not watching the latest tearjerker; I’m sitting next to my 4-year-old daughter at the Wreck-It-Ralph sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (screenplay by Pamela Ribon and Phil Johnston, story by Phil Johnston and Rich Moore and Jim Reardon and Pamela Ribon and Josie Trinidad).

For the second year in a row, the Writers Guild Awards show was held as a joint, virtual ceremony with the Writers Guild of America, East. The show, held this past Sunday on March 20, featured a live-in-studio host—Ashley Nicole Black—and presenters, with pre-recorded segments from presenters and honorees.
