This WGAW Committee brainstorms and develops events and programs, which provide WGA members with practical, inside knowledge about how the industry works and how it is changing, emphasizing tips and tools to help writers succeed. On this special evening, two masters of the genre—Fede Alvarez (Don't Breathe) and Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man)—share how they approach crafting their screenplays, from how they build suspense to how they translate their stories to the screen as writers-directors. $20. Seasoned Readings: The Cleaning Crew by Nancy Beverly

The Cleaning Crew is about a small hazmat clean-up team operating in L.A. headed up by former investigative reporter Bo Anne Wexler who has found a new way to channel her (sometimes over-reaching) fix-it mindset—and who will ultimately try and fix big messes her family members have caused. The WGAW Career Longevity Committee's Seasoned Readings series promotes and celebrates the work of writers age 50 and over. A light reception will follow the reading.

Info: (323) 782-4589. The Writers Guild of America West's LGBTQ+ Writers Committee seeks to utilize its constituency as a resource to all writers who include LGBTQ+ characters in their work. Its members also wish to provide cultural and educational opportunities for WGAW members to nurture an understanding of how sexual orientation and gender identity affect the lives of writers; endeavor to provide networking and social activities enabling the WGAW membership to better know one another and create a greater demand for the writing services of LGBTQ+ WGAW members; and strive to generate a greater awareness within the Guild of sexual orientation (and gender identity) as a minority and, where appropriate, to identify and advocate against instances of homophobia, transphobia and/or discrimination within our industry. The Disability Scene – Year Five

The Writers with Disabilities Committee presents its fifth annual Disability Scene event, an evening of disability-themed scenes written for the event or pulled from screenplays, teleplays, webisodes and stage plays submitted by guild members, both disabled and non-disabled. The specially selected scenes are as follows: He Won't Rise Again by Greg Roque, Be My Eyes by Carly Woodworth, 1-900-INSPIRED by David Radcliff, Reverse Psychology by Gary Goldstein, Fulton Family Funerals by Andra Whipple, The Company by Kalen Feeney, The Marvelous Crisis of Living by Erik Linthorst, Memories by Alison Zeidman, Barret, the Professional by EJ Tanner & Tyler Hoog, Trigger Warnings by Scott Tobis and Cursed by Karol Ruth Silverstein. This year's scenes will be directed by Jenni Gold and Gary Goldstein and cast by David Zimmerman. A light food reception will follow the event. WGAW members only with 2 guests.

Screenwriters Publish

More and more screenwriters are writing novels, often based on their own scripts—whether because they recognize that it's important to have sellable IP that they can in turn get hired to adapt, or because writing a novel just makes sense in their current circumstances. Our panelists have written for the screen, the stage and the page, and have experience in both independent and top-tier publishing. They'll share their insights about the form, the process and the marketplace.
