California voters have a crowded ballot this year which is why we’re highlighting two very important propositions for Guild members. The Writers Guild urges you to vote YES on prop 16 and NO on prop 22.

Diverse writers’ rooms begin with diverse classrooms. Proposition 16 would repeal Proposition 209 and reinstate affirmative action in California. Be a part of the movement for racial and gender equality and help us spread the word about the importance of this initiative. Restoring affirmative action is about tackling systemic racism and sexism and removing barriers to equal opportunity, something writers care deeply about. The Guild wants to change a system that for too long has allowed wealthy and well-connected Californians exclusive access to lucrative careers, including in Hollywood. That’s why we’re supporting Proposition 16 and hope you’ll join us.

Proposition 22 is an anti-union, anti-worker initiative that we must help defeat. In a desperate attempt to avoid providing gig-workers the benefits of being employees, as opposed to independent contractors, Uber, Lyft, Doordash and Instacart are pouring $200 million into passing prop 22. This proposition would allow these companies to continue violating workers’ rights by buying a special exemption to California law. The Writers Guild is joining labor unions across the state along with our elected leaders and tens of thousands of app-based drivers to urge Californians to reject this ballot measure.
